Study on impurities in EStudy on impurities in ecstasy tabletsWe are looking firstly at what impurities are present in street sample of MDMA, in particular reaction by-products. The second stage of the project will involve various toxicological tests of these impurities, including neurotoxicity and mutagenicity tests. The other work on MDMA we are doing involves the synthesis of a potential neurotoxic impurity. The chemistry is going well, but I'd emphasise that we have not seen this impurity in MDMA at this stage. I believe it will only be found in MDMA synthesised from safrole using the HBr/methylamine route, which to my knowledge is not used frequently, if at all.
